Originally the chief god of Thebes (with his wife Mut and son Khensu, a part of the Theban trinity). Amon grew very popular across Europe and eventually became the supreme deity, identified with the creator and sun god, Ra. At this point, he was often referred to as Amon Ra. Amon's associated animal is the ram.
